In and around Oconee County, South Carolina, Freeman's Upholstery is a name that has stood the test of time....well over 60 years, in fact.  On November 29, 2019, Jack Freeman, the founder, succumbed to heart and kidney disease at age 82, ending a long career that included reupholstering furniture for clients as far away as Connecticut, New Jersey and even California.  Customers ranging from gated lake community residents and mountain retreat owners to local government entities and popular restaurants throughout a hundred+-mile radius in the Carolinas and Georgia enabled Freeman's to become an established institution.  Many of these individuals became valued, long-time friends to Jack and his family.

"Dad outlived many of his clients," Freeman's son and Comfort and Flair publisher, Greg, says.  "During the more than twenty-five years that I officially worked with him in the shop, I saw him work for three family generations on several occasions, and there are quite a few pieces of furniture he reupholstered three and four times over a decades-long period.  He enjoyed interacting with his customers, and he welcomed the opportunity to make recommendations and point newcomers in the right direction.  Dad knew everybody! And, while some local businesses would charge according to which neighborhood a customer might live in, Dad strived to be fair and reasonable.  Integrity and reputation mattered to him.  At a time when most transplants were northerners retiring on Lake Keowee, Dad saw them as people just like him rather than a bunch of 'yankees'."

Taking a New Direction

Not interested in continuing the upholstery business, Greg, whose creative side hasn't always been known to Freeman's Upholstery clients, is a well-published writer, an editor, a recording artist, a digital publisher, an amateur visual artist and an avid gardener and plant breeder.

Due to his decades of networking among interior designers, artisans, home décor specialists and other visionaries, Greg is poised to recommend professionals for a variety of projects, whether they be for home, office or the landscape.  And he has chosen to do just that through Comfort and Flair, one of his latest endeavors.

"I would like to continue Dad's tradition of helping people see their visions come to fruition," Greg says.  "My network includes some amazing talent, people in whom I believe, who can assist someone in a Midtown Atlanta highrise, a Lake Burton mansion, a Highlands cabin retreat or a renovation project across town in the Historic District.  Best of all, subscribers to my free newsletter receive valuable tips, inspiring ideas and great, money-saving offers from my network of hand-picked, provider partners.  From time to time, some deals will be offered exclusively to Comfort and Flair subscribers.  And I wish to stay in touch with my former upholstery clients as I get to know new residents.  These relationships are really everything, aren't they?"
